Well, this is the meeting you've all been waiting for!! This month's meeting is the BAPVA annual Summer Social. Yes, it's a party. No speakers, or other formal activities, just a party! Great food and drinks will be provided.

For those of you who joined us last year for this summer fling, we hope you can make it again this year. For those that didn't here is another chance to experience the fun, the camaraderie, the food, the drink, the networking, the gossip (if you're not there you may be the subject of the gossip), the pool (don't worry Vaino, it can't happen twice to the same person), and Jill's special dessert!

For those coming back from WEVA, come to the social and fill us in on the latest new gear (Did Sony announce an EX4?).

The event will be held at the home of Joe Oliverio.

Greetings, BAPVA members guests, and celebrities!

The summer months are supposed to be fun, right? Well, in keeping with the summer spirit, this month we're going to combine some light hearted learning with some down to earth feedback with a Member Exhibition. I think you will all really enjoy our featured speaker this month. He has a great sense of humor and storytelling ability. For those of you new folks, a BAPVA Member Exhibition is a session in which you get to have your personal video projects shown and critiqued. Have no fear, though, the feedback is intended to be constructive and helpful, as a learning tool. So don't be shy - submit your work for viewing!

First Program: The Lighter Side of Video Gadgets, Equipment Obsolescence, and Creative Problem Solving

We are honored to have Stefan Sargent with us this month. Stefan writes for DV Magazine and is a widely recognized expert in our field. He also has a great sense of humor and an endless list of entertaining stories. In his presentation, he is going to give us some examples of how to creatively deal with surprise problems that arise when shooting video. You won't believe some of the things he's done! This is sure to provide some laughs and learning.

Next, he'll show us some of his best video gadgets, how they can improve your production quality, and how to build them. Finally, he'll speak to the issue of knowing when to upgrade your equipment. Do you think you need the latest, hot camera? Think again, and come hear what Stefan has to say on the subject!

- Creative handling of those inevitable surprises we face in our daily work
- Gadgets you can build and use to boost your production value
- Equipment upgrading: knowing WHEN is the key to success

Second Program: Member Exhibition

Get your shorts on.. video shorts, that is. You can enter 1 event and 1 non-event video (up to 4 minutes each) at the beginning of the program for judging later in the evening. Make sure there are no identifying logos within the program.

Editing... yes, we're all good editors, like a fine race car. But even a race car can use a tune-up once in a while. At the June BAPVA meeting we'll be talking editing technique and NLE systems. Hopefully you'll come away with a few new techniques you can use in your productions as well as stay abreast of the latest editing trends. In addition, we will have 3 of the major NLE systems on-site for you to look at "up close and personal". We'll be sharing tips and tricks, providing troubleshooting help and giving you a glimpse of the other NLEs out there. Please join us for an interactive and informative evening.

Editing Tips and Tricks with Joe Perez

Joe is an experienced and highly recognized editor. We'll start by getting an update on the latest editing trends and styles. Then Joe will be sharing examples of his best practices in live action editing and animation creation. We will get to see how he does it, the tools used, and how we can all learn ways to expand our editing skill set. Hopefully this will inspire us all to stay fresh and keep the creativity going!

- Animation production for video editors
- Live action editing techniques
- The impact of story and music on editing style
- Recommended resources for those wanting to learn more
- How to become, and stay inspired

NLE System Demo Breakout Groups

We will have individual demo stations for Final Cut Pro, Premiere, and Vegas and we will breakout into groups at each station. You may stay at one station or rotate to check them all out. This will be an interactive group activity and not a formal presentation. The group at each station will share tips/tricks, help each other with troubleshooting, and have a chance to get familiar with the different NLE alternatives on the market. This is your chance to become more productive with your NLE and also to "show your stuff" and help a fellow videographer.

- Sharing of tips/tricks
- Peer-to-peer troubleshooting help

We will have a panel consisting of Mark Shepherd, Ron Dawson, and Kelly Priest. They will share the business practices that have made them successful over the years. We will be covering the subjects listed below, but it is a totally open forum. So you get to ask about those pesky issues specific to your business that are keeping you awake at night. There is a lot of brain power on this panel, so let's learn from it!

Important Legal Issues for Videographers

While we sometimes joke about lawyers and legal issues, they are a reality in our everyday lives as well as in our businesses. We will have an attorney with us to talk through some of the key legal issues facing videographers, how to minimize problems, and what to do in the event you need legal help. You may find some surprise subjects you hadn't thought about, so keep paper and pencil handy.

Sony EX1/27U/S270U High Definition Cameras

Sony has raised the bar with the announcement of two new lines of HD cameras targeted at event and corporate applications: the EX1 and the 27U/S270U. We will be getting a live demo of both families from the experts at Snader and Associates.

Tired of one step forward and two steps back with HD cam light sensitivity? The EX1 may be the answer. How about those piles of tape sitting in your edit suite? Want to save time in acquisition? Check out the new workflow based on solid state cards (no tape). The 27U family is a more traditional tape based camera but with significantly updated features and interchangeable lenses. It offers both handycam and over-the-shoulder form factors. We will be examining both the technical capabilities AND the workflow. One of our members, an EX1 owner will be on hand to provide some real-life input during the demo.

John Goolsby!
Award winning videographer, John Goolsby, will be speaking at our February 18th meeting. John is known throughout the industry as one of the best.He is a regular speaker at the WEVA Expo, where is seminars are standing room only. He is the author of The Business of Wedding and Event Videography, a must read for anyone serious about videotaping in the wedding event arena.

John's Meeting topics will include:
- Size up a shooting situation
- Develop a story framework and shoot material along those lines
- Storytelling in Editing: How to identify and develop a concept
- How to communicate that message in pictures and sound.

"Milan C Shah has been a web developer building internet sites for clients since 1995. Beginning 2004 some very interesting developments in online video made him rethink delivery of online video solutions. Today he concentrates on optimizing video to create interactive websites which reach out to online viewers in their teens, 20s, and 30s. He is a member of the Illinois Videographers Association (IVA) and has started creating the online video section so members who miss meetings can still watch the entire lineup of speakers online."

Adam Wilt: HD guru

Adam Wilt is a freelance cameraman and editor, with a day job as a senior applications engineer with Omneon Video Networks. Over the past 30 years he has worked in film and video covering almost every format. For the first six years of this century, he was a contributing editor for DV Magazine, writing the magazine's "Technical Difficulties" column and reviewing new cameras. His website http://www.adamwilt.com is a repository for usefull and 'hard-won' information, tips and answers to many video-related questions. Adam will be addressing the current and future status of HD formats, as well as taking your questions on everything HD. That sound you hear is the school-bell ringing.

Vincent Quach: CEA Finalist

Cinematic is a somewhat overused term, but its the best way to describe BAPVA's entry to the WEVA Local Association Battle. Come view this movie-trailer-style commercial and ask the all-important 'how did you get that shot?' question.

Vincent Quach will be talking about his experience as a Bridal Spotlight CEA Finalist. Who knows, it might be YOU next year?

Members Exhibition

Finally, we will be having a members exhibition, so dust off those DVDs waiting for a receptive audience. Remember, you can't win if you don't enter. As always, the pieces are limited to 4 minutes (or only the first 4 minutes will be shown). Place no identifying information within the video to keep the judging unbiased.

Webmaster and professional designer Tim Ware of Hyperarts will offer his subjective review of what works and what doesn't on a video web-site. Dust off those edited gems and bring them out for the first exhibition of 2007. Keep them short and anonymous. 4 minutes is the limit for each entry, and feedback will be given from our panel of judges.

Focus on the Story

Bob Gliner creates documentaries with impact! Bob Gliner is an award winning documentary producer with more than 30 programs to his credit. His programs have appeared on PBS stations throughout the United States and have also been shown to classes in a wide variety of university and public school settings. His primary focus is social problems and social change - both inside the United States and throughout the world. He has shot programs in such disparate locales as Russia, Macedonia, Vietnam, India, Tanzania, Israel, Ecuador, and Cuba. He is proficient in all aspects of the production process from initial stages of researching and organizing the production to script writing, interviewing, camera and editing. He is also a professor of sociology at San Jose State University.

Bob will be sharing some of his work and talking about the process and skills involved in creating powerful, emotional, and socially conscious documentaries.

Light Up Your World

Art Adams, DP will share his secrets to getting the best out of your lighting gear for all kinds of situations. A San Francisco Bay Area native, Art spent ten years in Southern California-first attending film school, then working in the film industry on every kind of production. Starting as 2nd camera assistant on low-budget features, moving up to first camera assistant, camera operator, and to director of photography while working on feature films, episodic television shows, spots, music videos and sitcoms. His past clients include Walmart, Kaiser Permanente, Toyota, Cellular One, Visa, Intel, Best Buy, The Gap, Old Navy and many more. In 1993 Art returned to Northern California, where he currently focuses on short form projects: spots and high-end corporate productions both in film and digital. Presently, most of his work is shot on HD or 24p SD. Art will be sharing his expertise in lighting for video for the time-harried videographer. He will also share some of his recent work and detail how he got his eye-catching results.

A former rock-band photographer and film graduate from the Academy of Art University, Kristen integrates her love for photography and set design into her wedding films,

professionals, and high-profile clients throughout the country as well as
internationally. Kristen will be talking about the use of super-8mm film
within wedding productions.

3. Dan Grumley, owner of Event by Wire.
Dan has invented a mobile "LIVE" Webcasting kit that allows anyone to
webcast their wedding or event live. You can now stream to a hundred people

"An Evening with Adobe"
Adobe has played an important role in the growth of the digital imaging since the release of Photoshop in 1990. It has been influential in the video and film industry since its acquisition of of After Effects in 1994. Tonight's program will feature one of Adobe's most dynamic speakers, Kevan O'Brien. Kevan will give us an overview of Adobe's suite of integrated products, delve into the inner workings and show us some useful methods, tips & tricks, and give a sneak peak at some "cool new stuff coming down the pipe."

A few weeks ago , James Burkart posted a question on the BAPVA message board about realtime internet broadcasting of a wedding ceremony. Tonight we will provide an answer. Our opening act will be Jonathan Dean, whose new enterprise, the Wedcast Company, does just that. "Cool," you say, "but my upcoming wedding on the Mendocino bluffs will have no internet access." Not to worry, Jonathan can provide a direct satellite uplink to the 'net anywhere in the world.

Members will share their WEVA 06 experiences with the group. There will be brochures, swag, etc. from WEVA. Just like your wedding day, there'll be lots that you did not get to see or maybe even already forgot about. So let numerous videographers share those special moments with you. Brings a tear to your eye, doesn't it?

People attending WEVA are kindly asked to collect and bring to the meeting as much literature, giveaways and memorabilia (maybe even a demo from that videographer in New Jersey) as is feasible to share at the meeting. Take an extra suitcase. Or two. Come and report on your favorite seminars or tradeshow discovery.
