Our annual dinner was a huge success, Jill put on a fabulous event, as always. With a packed house we announced Chuck Savadelis, Savadelis Films as the 2009 BAPVA Videographer of the Year and Jim Snow as the 2009 BAPVA Member of the Year.

We also discussed the results of the Annual Survey that was sent out to all members last month. We are glad everyone is satisfied with the direction the board has taken the association and we plan to continue this throughout 2010 and beyond.

You may have noticed that we just sent out an email about the new BAPVA Google Group. This new email discussion list is in place to allow members to send emails to eachother. Feel free to start using it, if for some reason you did not receive an email about this group, contact me (Dan O'Hara).

March 15, 2010 is going to be our first Member Exhibition of the year. So start getting those 4 minute masterpieces ready.

Matt's presentation will last for the entire meeting and there will be a Q&A session at the end.

Matt Davis founded Life Stage Films just over three years ago. His studio is based in Wilmington, NC. In that time he has become a multi-year WEVA CEA winner, increased his company to eight staff people, and commands some of the highest rates for wedding video services in North Carolina, all during a recession. He has also launched a Video Business Coaching Program for event videographers to help get them on the fast track to owning their business, instead of just working in it. Although he gets much joy from having happy clients, nothing is more rewarding to him than giving back to the video industry and doing his part to make it a better place to make a living.

Well folks, we were not able to find a venue in December for our Annual BAPVA Dinner. But don't fret, we will still be having our Annual BAPVA dinner in January! We'll be sending those details in a future email. In the meantime, we still plan to have a regular meeting in December.

The topic of this month's meeting is the most requested one of all... a Member's Exhibition! We will devote the entire evening to it! Lots of time to show off your stuff and get plenty of feedback, plus push you ever closer to Member of the Year. So pull out those productions you've been wanting to show and let us put them on the big screen for you.

The guidelines for the Exhibition are described below.

As always, we will also have time to network and socialize within our group. So please join us for an enjoyable and informative evening.

- Members may submit up to 3 pieces, no more than one each of wedding, corporate, or documentary
- Maximum length of each is 4 minutes
- DVD is the accepted format
- 3 judges will evaluate and provide feedback on each piece

What is one of the most important contributors to production value? Lighting, you say? Right, you would be.

This month's meeting is going to focus on skills improvement in lighting for video. This will be a hands-on session. Our attendees will be broken up into 3 groups. Each group will rotate through 3 stations, each with a different lighting application set-up. Lighting set-ups will be shown, the set-up process described, why's and wherefore's will be discussed, questions answered, alternatives tried, etc.

The 3 set-ups will be: 1) Event run and gun on-camera lighting, 2) Sit-down interview lighting, and 3) Green screen lighting. These sessions are geared toward the advanced/expert videographer. They are not basic lighting classes. They assume the participant has a firm knowledge of lighting fundamentals and are meant to boost the skills of videographers that have many hours of lighting experience under their belts.

The stations will be managed by Oren Arieli, Mark Shepherd, and Steve Young.

Increasing Your Production Value Through Better Lighting

This is a hands-on session with 3 physical lighting setups as described below. Audience members will rotate through the stations for an in-depth learning experience. The sessions are geared toward advanced videographers. Everyone should attend, but don’t forego this meeting thinking we’re only going to rehash things you already know.

Lighting Station #1:

– Event Run and Gun on-camera Lighting
- On camera lights for 16:9 aspect ratio shooting
- Overcome lighting challenges of less sensitive HD cameras
- Avoiding the "deer in the headlights" look
- Inexpensive LED light solution
- Effective diffusers
- Cinematic dance floor lighting

Lighting Station #2:

- Sit-down Interview Lighting
- Minimizing the number of instruments and set-up time
- Modeling for different moods
- Dealing with challenges (bald heads, glasses, dark complexions, tight spaces, lens flare)
- Eye lights
- Eye lines
- Lighting backgrounds
- Making the talent pop

Lighting Station #3:

- Green Screen Lighting
- Correct screen exposure levels
- How to achieve even screen brightness
- Minimizing backwash on talent; using Bastard Orange gels
- Buying portable green screen gear
- Getting a crisp edge
- Physical space considerations

This month's meeting is going to focus on skills improvement in shooting and editing. Specifically, how to use image style to create emotion and tell a more engaging story. Having a compelling, emotional story is one of the most powerful techniques in producing quality video, and image style is as significant contributor to the emotional energy of your piece.

We are honored to have Josh Smith of Cinematicbride, who lives in Louisiana, with us, as our presenter/instructor for the evening. Josh is a very highly regarded event videographer who was voted Top 25 in both 2007 and 2008 by EventDV Magazine. He has been featured on Lifetime, Good Morning America, and Inside Edition. Josh's reputation and brand is highly regarded and we are fortunate to have him. He also teaches workshops as part of his business.

This session will be demonstration, not lecture. Josh is going to simulate an actual shooting session and show us how to direct, use different camera looks, choose camera angles, composition, motion and lighting to communicate specific emotions. He will then import the footage into his NLE and demonstrate his post production workflow, use of rhythm, pacing, effects, and music He is highly regarded for his colorization skills and has a lot to show and tell on this subject.

His "hands-on" teaching style should make this a great session.

This month will be our BAPVA meeting "lite". It has been an annual tradition that we have a social event type meeting in August. That means drinks by the pool, swimming if desired, lots of time to network, etc. But this year, we are also going to do some business. We will have a talk on "How to be more efficient on your field shoots". We will also have an informal Members Exhibition, where you submit your work for viewing and feedback from the group.
Food and drink will be catered by our two head BAPVA chef’s, Jill and Joe. Who can pass up a free meal in this economy??

Kelly Priest, one of our more experienced members, will give a brief talk about "how to be more efficient on a field shoot".

Topics will include: effective planning, how to economize on transported equipment, what to look for upon arrival, how to deal with audio or lighting issues, coordinating a multi-camera shoot, efficient shooting (good coverage in minimum time), etc.

Time is money, and we can all learn from the experience of others. So think of it as money in your pocket!

First Program: Alternatives to Blu Ray for HD distribution (20 minutes)
Speakers: Oren Arieli and Dan O’Hara

Our first program this month will address alternatives to Blu Ray. You may have heard of the Popcorn hour, as well as other alternative media that may make the lifetime of Blu Ray somewhat short. Oren and Dan will provide a brief presentation on this subject. It is intended to keep us abreast of new technology for distribution of our work.

Second Program: Hands-on Camera Image Tweaking Session (90 minutes)
Facilitators: Oren Arieli and Ted Nguyen

By popular demand, this month we will focus on getting the best possible image from your camera. Did you know that most prosumer cameras, when you buy them new, have been deliberately de-tuned by the manufacturer? In order to get the best image possible, you have to adjust the image settings. So which settings do you adjust and by how much? Well, if you attend this month's meeting, you'll find out!

We are going to have a hands-on session focusing on tweaking your camera for best image quality, matching two different cameras, and adjusting the "look" of your camera for different situations. We'll also show you how to use a vector scope and waveform monitor. This session is not a presentation. The entire audience will be up and involved at one of three camera station's turning dials, checking monitors collaborating, commenting, and learning. Ted Nguyen and Oren Arieli will be our facilitators who will float among the groups to guide us along.

Specific subjects to be covered:
- Proper use of vector scopes and waveform monitors
- Adjusting a camera image for optimum picture quality
- Matching two different cameras
- Adjusting the "look" of a camera for different situations

This month be sure to fasten your seatbelts and put on your thinking caps. We've got two meeting programs that will be jam packed with information – both technical and business.

In the current economic environment, using personal networking to secure wedding gigs will likely become more important than usual. To address this, we have an interactive panel discussion with a photographer, wedding planner, and venue marketing manager. We will be discussing the most effective practices for videographers to network amongst our peer service providers. "Interactive" is the key word here. Most of this panel discussion will be audience Q & A, so you will get to ask questions, make your own observations, etc. This should be a very lively segment.

In our second program, we'll address the subject of audio acquisition. We all pay close attention to our video images, but do we know how to get the same level of quality in our audio? Sennheiser will be here to talk about necessary audio for video equipment, fundamentals of audio acquisition, and the latest FCC spectrum changes affecting wireless mics.

As always, we will also have our Best Practices Sharing segment and time to network and socialize within our group. So please join us for an enjoyable and informative evening.

First Program: Best Practices for Wedding Gig Networking
This will be an interactive panel and audience discussion of effective networking practices for wedding videographers. Our panel will consist of Gene Higa (an award winning wedding photographer), Nicole Lisanne (Formerly D'Ambra, a highly recognized wedding planner), and Elisheva Basseri (an event planner at the Westin Palo Alto). This segment is intended to be an open forum for sharing of ideas and approaches to make us all better at networking for wedding gigs.

Specific subjects to be covered:
- How to establish a network
- Who should videographers network with
- Key elements/pre-requisites for establishing a relationship; What do you look for in a networking partner
- How do service providers prefer to be approached, effective first conversations
- Do venue lists matter?
- Maintaining a network
- After a job is booked how can we help each other deliver on it
- Relationship maintenance activities

Second Program: Audio Acquisition for Videographers; with Sennheiser
This program is intended to insure that our audio is as good as our video images. Our February 16th meeting is planned to be a great kick-off to the year. As our featured speaker, we are honored to have Jay Holben, the Technical Editor of DV Magazine. This month we have a jam packed session of interesting topics! Four topics, to be specific! But don't worry, we'll keep it light, interesting and entertaining. We'll be bringing in a couple of vendors to keep us up to date on some of the latest in NLE tools. We'll also attempt to reduce the fear, uncertainty, and doubt about making the jump from SD to HD, and finally will
be providing some advice on how to optimize your studio workflow. So, like I said, there will be a lot of meaty information. But we're a carnivorous group, so no problem.

Skills Building: Optimizing Your Studio Workflow Product Demo: Avid Media Composer 3.0

We're all looking for ways to get our work done faster, spending less time on the tools and more time on the creativity. So, the first part of this program is a presentation on studio workflow optimization for event and corporate video. From acquisition, ingest, editing, and distribution, we will look at ways of improving efficiency and creating better quality and happier clients.

The second segment will be a demo of Avid's Media Composer 3.0 NLE which has been significantly reduced in price. And while it's still more expensive than most competing NLEs it brings the many strengths of Avid. We've had significant member interest in this, so we'll get an up close and personal demo of the product.

Skills Building: Dealing with the Complexities of Upgrading from SD to HD & Product Demo: Matrox RT.X2

For those us that have and those that haven't made the jump to HD, there are many challenges and complexities that create fear, uncertainty and doubt. The entire workflow is not 100% seamless. This presentation will attempt to address some of the key challenges involved in adapting to this change in technology. The discussion will include the following:

- acquisition: different types of compression and media
- capture: workflow and compatibility issues between acquisition and editing systems
- editing: different types of HD editing (native vs transcoded), benefits of hardware acceleration, format mixing on timeline
- output and distribution: workflow and tools needed to distribute in Blu-ray

The second segment will be a demo of Matrox's RT.X2 NLE solution. It is a bundle of hardware and Premiere software that accelerates real-time playback from the timeline and can make editing much faster. We have a number of BAPVA members using this product with good results. Come have a look at it for yourself.

I think we would all agree that word-of-mouth referrals are some of the best we get and the most profitable. Simply, Facebook is the online equivalent of word of mouth, but on steroids. So, how does it work, why should you use it, and what can it do for your business?

As summer winds down, we at BAPVA are winding up! After a few months of social events, Summits, and lighter hearted meetings, we're turning up the heat at our September meeting with some heavyweight talent. We will have one of the most talented and recognized event videographers in the country with us. David Robin will be here to speak to us! You won't want to miss this one! Not only is he an expert in our field but is also a very interesting and engaging speaker.

We've had a number of meetings on camerawork, editing, and marketing, but this presentation is meant to bring it all together, from a true pro in the field, and show us those special things that he does to differentiate himself. He is an event videographer and will, therefore, be focusing and educating us on our main line of work. We should all come away with things we can do to take our personal and business performance to a higher level.

Since he started Boulevard Video Productions in 1986, and now David Robin Films in 2007, he has won from WEVA (Wedding & Event Videographers Association), an unprecedented 21 Creative Excellence Awards, The Bob LeBar Vision Award, The Distinguished Service Award, and in 2001 was inducted into The WEVA Hall of Fame. In 2005 David was awarded two Artistic Achievement Awards from the 4Ever Group, and EventDV Magazine announced David as one of the top 25 most influential and talented event videographers in the country, for two consecutive years (2005-2006).

It can be something you bought or built, a technique, device, or idea. As long as it makes an impact on your productivity and/or quality, others will want to hear about it!

We will give each of you a few minutes to show and describe your device or idea to the audience.

We were planning to do this in October, so we'll just move it up a month!

This could turn out to be one of the most informative and useful meetings we have, since you will come away with something that will save you time or improve your quality.

Next, he'll show us some of his best video gadgets, how they can improve your production quality, and how to build them. Finally, he'll speak to the issue of knowing when to upgrade your equipment. Editing... yes, we're all good editors, like a fine race car. But even a race car can use a tune-up once in a while. At the June BAPVA meeting we'll be talking editing technique and NLE systems. Hopefully you'll come away with a few new techniques you can use in your productions as well as stay abreast of the latest editing trends. In addition, we will have 3 of the major NLE systems on-site for you to look at "up close and personal". We'll be sharing tips and tricks, providing troubleshooting help and giving you a glimpse of the other NLEs out there. Please join us for an interactive and informative evening.

Editing Tips and Tricks with Joe Perez

Joe is an experienced and highly recognized editor. We'll start by getting an update on the latest editing trends and styles. Then Joe will be sharing examples of his best practices in live action editing and animation creation. We will get to see how he does it, the tools used, and how we can all learn ways to expand our editing skill set. Hopefully this will inspire us all to stay fresh and keep the creativity going!

NLE System Demo Breakout Groups

We will have individual demo stations for Final Cut Pro, Premiere, and Vegas and we will breakout into groups at each station. You may stay at one station or rotate to check them all out. This will be an interactive group activity and not a formal presentation. The group at each station will share tips/tricks, help each other with troubleshooting, and have a chance to get familiar with the different NLE alternatives on the market. This is your chance to become more productive with your NLE and also to "show your stuff" and help a fellow videographer.
